Shri Khodaldham

Ghuma, Ahmedabad, Gujarat

A grand sandstone temple to Maa Khodal, and a rare feat of temple building: the new temple was raised around a murti enshrined for nearly 150 years, without the sacred idol ever being moved.

Shri Khodaldham temple at dusk

A grand sandstone temple dedicated to Maa Khodal (Khodiyar Mata), hand-carved in Bansi Paharpur stone in the tradition of Vaastu and Shilp Shastra, from its ornate sabha-mandap and domed ceilings to the towering shikhar.

The challenge

A rare feat: the Mataji murti has been enshrined here for nearly 150 years, and the grand new temple was raised around it, without ever relocating the sacred idol.
